How to Avoid the Ground

The ground is one of the most dangerous places for officers to be when they are engaged in a physical altercation with an assailant. You'll be prepared to teach every officer specific strategies for keeping them off of the ground during an altercation, regardless of their current skill or fitness level.

Winning on the Ground

Even the most prepared, physically fit officer isn't going to be able to avoid every ground fight. You will provide your students with confidence when things go to the ground by teaching them the skills necessary to escape basic positions, use regular submission holds, and how to defend against them.

Weapon Retention

During an altercation, many officers lose awareness of their firearm. This usually happens when an officer becomes overly focused on the threat at hand or becomes momentarily distracted due to an injury or surprise. Whatever the reason, you'll coach them on simple techniques to maintain weapon control at all times.

Transitioning from a Ground Encounter to Handcuffing

One of the most difficult things for officers to do when dealing with a suspect on the ground is to transition from a grappling position into handcuffing. You'll be equipped to teach them the proper way to do this so they can gain better control of a suspect.

Coaching Strategies

Our FEAR discussion is a center piece of our training program and breaks down the traditional barriers found in many use of force training programs... ego.


Core goals:


  • Each student will progressively gain confidence teaching techniques in front of a class.


  • Address public speaking fears, reinforce the preparation necessary to coach and build confidence as a Coach.


  • Leave the program understanding that you are evaluated not just on how good you are at the skills yourself, but more importantly, in how good you make others.

Injury Prevention

Injury prevention does not mean exclusion! You will learn how to create a dynamic training environment that equips and prepares officers without getting them hurt in the training room.


Core goals:


  • Learn how to organize mats to ensure proper spacing, maximize observation of students, and control the speed and number of repetitions.


  • Learn the correct way to identify and document a student's pre-existing injuries, become aware of potential training limitations, and make adjustments to drills.


  • Learn the importance of conducting and coaching through shadow drills, reps on instructors, and in proper warmups and cool downs.

Mitigating Liability

Most agency don't train in "ground fighting" or real life scenarios for fear of liability. We mitigate liability by using current case law and legally accepted use-of-force resistance and response metrics.

  • To train officers how to escape physical confrontations through techniques and skill - not rage and anger.
